Joanna Powell
Through the things Joanna makes, she gives people some insight into how she sees. She uses tableau to subvert and rewrite stories concerning gender, sexuality, and humility. Her work is autobiographical. If something silly is happening it goes into the work, if Joanna is struggling it goes into the work. For her, the physical gesture that is given to the pieces is the most direct way of translating interior feelings into external expression. The work continues as a meditation on life, loss and all the minutia that happens in between.
Joanna Powell (b.1981,Dallas,TX) received a BFA in ceramics from the University of North Texas(2008) and received an MFA in ceramics from the University of Colorado at Boulder (2012). Powell has exhibited her work throughout the United States including The Archie Bray Foundation, The Clay Studio Philadelphia and Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. From 2013-2015 she was a long term-resident at The Archie Bray Foundation. In 2015, she was named an NCECA Emerging Artist. Currently, she has a full-time studio practice in Helena, MT, working toward future museum shows and exhibitions.
