David Robinson juxtaposes Southern iconography with more obscure, surreal or atypical elements to explore issues of race, religion and social mores associated with life in the Bible Belt and Mississippi Delta of the 1960s and ‘70s. Working with terra cotta or a sculpture clay body, he typically uses coil-building techniques to produce sculptures that he hopes challenge the viewer to look for connections and contradictions that will enable them to reevaluate their preconceived notions about the rural South.

David earned an MS in instructional design from Georgia State University in 2005 and his BA in English and French from Delta State University in Mississippi, in 1983. He has completed a residency at the Hambidge Creative Residency Program in Georgia, and will be a resident artist at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, in 2018, after his time as a 2017 Windgate Scholar at the Bray.
